Guy Fawkes top tips for dogs...

Did you know that it is proven that 45% of dogs are scared of fireworks?

There are several reasons for this including the obvious noise and flashing lights. Dogs aren’t known for their organisational skills and therefore do not own calendars, so unlike us don’t know when November 5th is approaching. It is natural for dogs to be afraid of loud noises just like us. Imagine if Guy Fawkes Night wasn’t an event and we heard numerous loud bangs, it would startle us. Your dog’s acute hearing means they are much more sensitive to the sounds of fireworks than us. The ‘bangs’ created by fireworks and the bright flashing lights trigger their nervous system which makes them nervous and anxious. A dog’s survival instinct will kick in telling them to run from the noise. Something you may not be aware of is that dogs are very sensitive to the odour fireworks produce.

Read our top tips on how to keep your dog safe and calm this weekend…

  • Firstly, be aware that as November 5th falls on a Saturday this year people will be letting off fireworks all weekend. Try everything in your power not to leave your precious pooch at home after dark, alone

  • Walk them early on in the daylight to avoid being caught out by any loud surprises. A long walk would be good to tire them out in the hope they are sleepy later on

  • By being at home and in their company you can keep them calm and ensure they feel secure. Try not to make a fuss as this will help get them used to the noise and light for the future

  • When letting them out into the garden for toilet use turn a light on and maybe assist them

  • Whether you are leaving the home, having your own display or staying in create a secure environment for the dog such as a cage (if they are used to that) or their bed where they can go if they feel scared

  • Provide them with a new toy or chew to keep them preoccupied

  • Close all windows and curtains to keep noise and light to a minimum

  • If you are hosting your own event purchase low noise level fireworks. They will still look just as amazing but will distract your dog a little less

  • Keep them inside in their secure environment when your show starts and then let them out to mingle with everyone if there are no hazards such as a bonfire. This way they will enjoy some company and attention and may help to settle them. It may be best to keep them on a lead to avoid any unwanted accidents

  • Fireworks also produce harmful waste that will litter the ground following a display. Ensure you clear the garden of this before letting them out and during the following days walkies keep an eye out for this

  • Pheromone diffusers can be purchased from your vets which diffuse calming scents

  • If you are going out to a display and leaving them alone, leave a light on and the TV or radio. This will also put off opportunists who will be lurking in the darkness looking for empty houses

  • In case of escape due to fear it is always a good ideal to have your precious pooch chipped to retrieve them asap

Have a great weekend and put your pooch first.
